Mobile Caregiver/Nursing Service for the Elderly in Umzingwane

Executive Summary

We propose a community-driven mobile caregiver/nursing service to address two critical challenges in Umzingwane: unemployment among youth and lack of accessible care for elderly residents. By training and employing local youth as mobile caregivers, we will provide scheduled healthchecks, medication

administration, meal preparation, and clinic and hospital visit support for isolated seniors. To launch this

initiative, we seek funding for 5 motorbikes (USD$3,000) each and medical kits (USD$1,500), ensuring

reliable transportation and essential care tools.

Problem Statement

1. Elderly Neglect: Many elderly in Umzingwane live alone, struggling with chronic illnesses, mobility issues,

and limited access to healthcare services and centres.

2. Youth Unemployment: High youth unemployment (estimated at~50% in Zimbabwe) fuels poverty and

migration, depriving the community of productive talent.

3. Healthcare Gaps: Public health facilities are overburdened, and families (including diasporans) often

cannot provide consistent care for aging relatives.

Solution: Mobile Caregiver Service

A youth-led mobile unit offering:

-Medical Support: Administering medication, woundcare, and vital signchecks (bloodpressure, glucose

levels).

-Daily Living Assistance: Meal preparation, hygiene support, and light house keeping.

-Logistical Aid: Organise transporting seniors to clinics/hospitals or collecting repeat prescriptions.

-SocialCare: Companionship and safety checks to reduce isolation and emergencies.

How It Works:

-Families/diasporans subscribe monthly (e.g.,$20–$50) for scheduled visits or pay per service (ad-hoc).

-Caregivers use a motorbike to reach remote households efficiently.

-Partnerships with clinics/hospitals streamline medication collection and referrals.

Funding Requirements

Motorbike - $3000 - Reliable transport for caregivers to navigate the rural terrain.

Medical Kits - $1500 - BP monitors, first-aid supplies, gloves, antiseptics, and chronic care tools.

Sustainability Plan

1. Revenue Streams:

-Subscription fees from families/diasporans.

-Pay-per-service model for ad-hoc requests (e.g.,prescription collection:$5–$10).

2. Cost Efficiency:

-Low operational costs (fuel, caregiver stipends).

-Scalability: Expand services to neighbouring districts as demand grows.

3.Community Ownership:

-Train 5 –10 youth initially, creating a replicable model for other regions.

Impact

-Elderly: Improved health outcomes, reduced hospitalizations, and dignity in aging.

-Youth: Jobs, skills in healthcare, and renewed community pride.

-Families/Diasporans: Peace of mind knowing loved ones are cared for.

Implementation Timeline

1. Month 1: Secure funding, procure motorbike/medicalkits.

2. Month 2: Train caregivers (basic nursing, firstaid, ethics).

3. Month 3: Pilot launch with 20 elderly clients; refine operations.

4. Month 6: Scale to 50+ clients and evaluate impact.
